I’m hoping you have read some of past blogs already. Otherwise, you may be lost in this one. For a little background, I suggest to read blog entry, "The One When I Spent My First Weekend in Hartford.

I always wanted to learn how to play the piano. I actually took a month of piano lessons back in 1994. I was on an early maternity leave while the father of my soon-to-be-born son was away for part of his hospital training. I practiced everyday. I wanted to surprise him when he comes home. My piano teacher chose  Chopin’s Nocturne Op9 No 2, which I learned, but the surprise did not happen. I went to pre-term labor and everything went downhill from there. But that’s another story.

Sometime in 2015, about a year after I got engaged with John, I bought a piano. John thought that I did it so I can finally check off one of the things in my bucket list. The truth is, I wanted to surprise him on our wedding day. I know how he likes that I can somehow carry a tune. But for me to sing to him, is something he would expect. Now to play the piano while singing “I Will Be Here”… that will be a big surprise!
I can only imagine how I will bring the man who I thought loved me in tears. I know I will. So I took another month of piano lessons, but my motivation was slowly drifting away for reasons I now know. Well, that surprise did not happen. In fact, my piano had been collecting dust for about 2 years. My daughter, Samantha tries to play a song or two when she’s in the mood. As rare as that happens, when she does play, it makes me feel like buying that piano is so worth it after all!

I have thrown away many things that reminded me of John. I was thinking of selling my piano. Thank God I reached my “Hello Life” phase. I am now learning my third piece, Both Sides Now by Joni Michel!(Yes- the image I posted is  from that heartbreaking scene in the movie, Love Actually)

Oh, I almost forgot. When I brought home the piano, it came with a recording of Chopin’s Nocturne Op9 No 2!Hmm, Bad Omen. DELETE and RECORD something new!

  • Now, to my readers… As heartbreaking as these may all sound, remember that my blog’s title is Bye Felicia, Hello Life. The “Hello Life” parts will be blogged about,  (some are already in The One With The Summer Surprises.”)  But as writer Octavia Butler said, “ You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap… thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually, you get better at it.”

I think it’s really cool that you’re learning to play for yourself now. I’ve played my whole life and it can be such a good way to unwind and let your troubles just drift into the background for a while.

I've always wanted to learn to play piano, the older I get the more I feel discouraged but you've inspired me to never give up and it's never too late to start :)

My father used to play piano and since he died I wanted to do it as well. It's been 20 years already and I never dared to take a lesson. I admire your strength. Thank you for inspiring others.

Sometimes it is even more meaningful to take something that we were motivated by another to do and turn it into an act of self-love!
I'm glad you decided to do it for yourself now. I have two sisters that play piano and I remember I used to dance ballet when they were practicing. Great childhood memories. I'm sure your daughter will remember the piano!

This is lovely :) When I'm facing a break-up, I throw away everything that reminds me of the man! Luckily I never got a piano, but I've sold two guitars already at the district's second-hand market :D

First of all i am cracking up you named your blog Bye Felicia Hello Life. Did you see the movie Friday, because some people have no idea where "bye Felicia" came from and its definitely that movie, and if you knew who Felicia was in that movie it is even funnier why people are telling her bye! Secondly, I know what it is like to have a momentum from someone from your past and to want to get rid of it because of the memories it brought you, isnt it amazing what items can do for you. Its bittersweet that way.

Sometimes you get so caught up on trying to make things better while the other person is falling apart. It just breaks my heart that you had to go through all of this.
